Since landing in Jezero Crater in February 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover has been doing far more than taking selfies on Mars. It has drilled rock cores, flown a helicopter, tested oxygen production, and gathered evidence that its landing site once held a lake and a river delta. Its findings are steadily building the case that Mars was once warm, wet, and potentially habitable, and its carefully sealed sample tubes may one day bring pieces of Mars back to Earth laboratories. Here is what Perseverance has actually found so far.
Jezero Crater was chosen because orbital images showed a clear river delta, the fan shaped deposit where a river once flowed into a lake. Perseverance confirmed that interpretation on the ground, finding layered sedimentary rocks laid down by flowing water, plus coarse boulders that could only have been moved by powerful floods. The delta's layers read like pages of history, recording times when water flowed gently and times when it surged violently, and each layer preserves clues about the climate of ancient Mars.
Among the most exciting finds are minerals that form only in the presence of water, including carbonates and clays, which can preserve chemical traces of past environments. Perseverance's instruments can identify these minerals from a distance and up close, mapping how water chemistry changed over time. Some rocks show signs of interaction with water long after they formed, suggesting groundwater persisted even as the surface dried out, which extends the window during which life could conceivably have existed.
Perseverance is not designed to find living organisms, but to find biosignatures, chemical or structural traces that life might have left behind. It has found intriguing organic molecules in Jezero rocks, though organics can also form without life, so scientists are careful not to overclaim. The rover has also imaged unusual rock textures and mineral veins that deserve closer study, and its sample tubes preserve the most promising rocks for future laboratory analysis, where instruments far more sensitive than anything on a rover can settle the question.
One of the mission's cleverest achievements was Ingenuity, the small helicopter that flew seventy two times despite being designed for just five flights. Ingenuity proved powered flight is possible in Mars's thin atmosphere, scouted terrain ahead of the rover, and demonstrated a new way to explore. Its success has shaped plans for future aerial explorers, including larger helicopters and even aircraft that could survey vast areas of Mars far faster than any wheeled rover.
Perseverance also carried MOXIE, an experiment that successfully produced oxygen from Mars's carbon dioxide atmosphere, reaching a total of about one hundred and twenty grams across its runs. That may sound small, but it proves the concept that future astronauts could manufacture breathable oxygen and rocket fuel on Mars instead of hauling it all from Earth. Combined with the rover's weather station, which records temperature, wind, and dust, MOXIE's results feed directly into planning for human missions.
The rover continues to climb toward the crater rim, exploring older rocks that predate the lake and may reveal Mars's earliest history. Its sample depot, a collection of tubes left on the surface as a backup, waits for a future mission to collect them, though the return mission's design is still being reworked. Whatever happens next, Perseverance has already transformed Jezero from a promising dot on an orbital map into a richly documented ancient landscape, and its story is still being written one drill core at a time.
